thepowerofdeath: (What?)
I mentioned a few posts ago that most of the crushes I get are on fictional characters, and one of the strongest of these is on Daniel Jackson from Stargate. I will accept either James Spader from the movie, or Michael Shanks from SG-1, although my preference is definitely Michael Shanks

He's just this adorably nerdy, passionate, brilliant, caring, snarky and sexy little shit. With the most gorgeous eyes, hair I want to run my fingers through and a jawline that I want to nibble my way along.

I'm not entirely sure how this journal is turning into my random musings on fanfiction. It's not what I expected to be writing about, but I'm enjoying where it's going - especially the way posts are inspiring each other.

Today I'm wondering why it is that I'm only interested in reading fanfiction for Stargate (mostly SG-1, sometimes SG:A). I'm not a huge TV/movie watcher, but I do also enjoy Charmed, Farscape, The Librarians, Relic Hunter and The Sentinel.

I even know that The Sentinel has a pretty large fandom. A quick glance at AO3 shows over 14k fics, and I completely get the Ellison/Sandburg thing, and you could say I shipped them. But I have absolutely no inclination to dive into the AO3 tag for them and start reading.

So what is it that Stargate has that the other shows don't have that makes me read the fic. Mostly Jack/Daniel, but I'll read pretty much anyone/everyone if it's well written. And I do enjoy a good, gen, team, mission fic. I especially enjoy reading anyone/Daniel, with Daniel on bottom. Most combinations of Jack/Sam/Daniel or Cam/Sam/Daniel/Vala work really well for me. I've recently discovered Sheppard/Mitchell which I'm enjoying reading. But my heart will always belong to Jack/Daniel.

I don't search for Jim/Blair fic, or (especially considering I read Cam/Vala), I don't read John/Aeryn or have any interest in it. Why do I keep coming back to Stargate SG-1 and Jack/Daniel?

[personal profile] smallrobot commented on my post about SG-1 kink-fic saying
I sometimes go into a tag thinking something like, "This pairing and this concept make too much sense. I'm sure there will be lost of fics listed under the tag!", and end up with a few at best. I'm always so puzzled when it happens, but then I realise my view of the characters is just not shared by many other people in this respect.

And it got me thinking how we all see the characters so differently. Everyone in fandom watches the same show, the same episodes, the same stories, with the same characters but we all see them so differently. We all see their attributes and intentions a little differently, we react to different scenes in different ways.

Take Sam Carter in the SG-1 premiere for instance - the 'sex organs on the inside' speech: I know a lot of people (Amanda Tapping included) think it's very cringey but I think it's very typical attitude of a woman in a man's world in the mid-late 90s. I'm sure I've said similar things to old white men on dig sites in my time. I also think it's the moment she won Jack's respect - standing up for herself, matching their jibes, keeping up with them but still remaining (mostly)respectful of the chain of command. I also think Hammond was very amused in that scene.

Then we move into fandom. Even something as simple as which pairing/s we ship. A quick look at the stats on AO3 and there are 6336 Jack/Sam & 6211 Jack/Daniel. There's also 908 Daniel/Vala, 632 Sheppard/McKay, 607 Sam/Janet, 398 Mitchell/Sheppard, 371 Sam/Daniel, 354 Daniel/Sha're.

(There's a whole other train of thought in there brewing about how not just I refer to some characters by first name, and others by surname - why Jack and not O'Neill, or Mitchell and not Cameron when they're both military).

Even in those 6211 Jack/Daniel fics, the variations are multiple. 1090 established relationship vs 813 first time, for instance. Or 420 AU compared to 407 episode related. There's 1224 angst, 826 drama, 615 hurt/comfort, and 595 romance.

The most basic question of who's on top - ask 10 people, get 10 different answers.
Are they written as gay, 'only gay for you', bi, experimenting - ask 10 people, get 15 different answers
Throw kink into the equation, and then you ask 10 people, get 20 different answers.

I'm not well-versed at using AO3 enough to know how to drill down into what other tags are included in fics tagged with BDSM but I imagine there are even more variations than I've had hot dinners in the last 34 years.

Anyone who's been in fandom long enough has undoubtedly experienced the ~drama of 'ship wars' because god forbid anyone else see the characters in a different way! But I absolutely love how we all see the same thing completely differently - whether it's because we have different life experiences, different experiences of queer... or just plain different sexual fantasies.

Personally, I go for: Jack is bi; Daniel doesn't care about gender; and I don't really care who's on top in either vanilla or kink, both work for me and they're both super hot. There's something about the big powerful general on his knees for Daniel (also nicely cliché), but there's also something fun about Jack making Daniel, the linguist, lose his coherence.

And now I'm going to continue discovering more kinks I didn't know I had LOL

I put some TV in the background as I continued exploring AO3, and found some Ancient Aliens which is always very entertaining. And it occurs to me that considering my love for Stargate, it shouldn't be too surprising that I'd enjoy this kind of thing

For anyone who doesn't know, Ancient Aliens is a 'documentary'-style TV show based around the ancient astronaut theory. This theory posits that intelligent extra-terrestrial beings visited Earth and made contact with humans in antiquity and prehistoric times. Proponents of the theory suggest that this contact influenced the development of modern cultures, technologies, religions, and human biology. A common position is that deities from most, if not all, religions are extra-terrestrial in origin, and that advanced technologies brought to Earth by ancient astronauts were interpreted as evidence of divine status by early humans.

Unsurprisingly, this theory is not taken seriously by archaeologists who view it as pseudoscientific, pseudohistorical, pseudoarchaeological and all around just plain unscientific.

This does not stop me from being incredibly entertained by the show. The host Giorgio A. Tsoukalos is... quite enthusiastic and also very entertaining. The show's episodes also cover Atlantis and other lost ancient civilizations, extraterrestrial contact and ufology, and popular conspiracy theories

I'm sure by now - if you're familiar with Stargate, especially the movie - how I'm connecting the dots here. After all, when we first meet Dr Daniel Jackson, he's being laughed out of academia for his radical theories involving cross-pollination of ancient cultures and the Egyptian pyramids being landing sites for alien spaceships and were far older than previously thought

Daniel Jackson - ancient astronaut theorist!

Following on from my previous post about discovering orgasm control/edging kinkfic in SG-1 last month, I've been slowly exploring the tags on AO3.

Most of what exists, at least what's tagged, is Jack/Sam. I have nothing against Jack/Sam when it's written well (I'm aware that is an incredibly subjective term) - there's already a level of power play between them and I would prefer that to be explored as well. Or subverted with her sexually dominating him. That's not to say I'm not enjoying the fic. I am. Some of what I'm reading is incredibly hot.

I've found very little of it in Jack/Daniel which surprises me. But there's a lot of 'BDSM' tagged for them so it might just be that the specific kink isn't also tagged. I'm learning that I don't mind which of them is on top, it's a lot of fun either way. And I've started exploring bondage fic for them.

I'm now trying to decide if I'm interested enough to investigate the tag in fandoms I don't read - not knowing the characters will essentially make it like reading original fiction. I guess the only way to figure it out is to try!

I have made my first foray in writing fanfiction. I still haven't been able to find the exact Jack/Daniel post-Fire and Water fic that I wanted to read so I wrote out a few bullet points of what I wanted it to be, opened up Word and started to write.

I have written 100ish words to start with and already discovered that this is a lot harder than I expected it to be. Having never written fiction of any kind before, I'm not sure why I thought it would be easy but I have even more admiration than I already did for all the people who write and share their stories with us.

Jack had been on edge all evening, a little sharp, a little impatient, not quite snappy but not as relaxed as he should have been, considering this was supposed to have been a party. Daniel was getting frustrated, and if he was honest, a little sad and disappointed - did Jack still think so little of him that he was pissed off that he wasn't actually dead? It had seemed that Jack was relieved he was alive but as the evening had gone on, Daniel was starting to doubt it. At least Sam and Teal'c seemed genuinely happy he was still alive.

I am aware these words are not great, but you can't edit a blank page. The plan is try and get out of my own way, get a first edit down and then decide if I'm going to post it as is, or if I need to figure out how to find a beta reader. But first, it needs another few hundred words. Wish me luck?

Do you ever go through a phase where you just want to read a particular type of fic?

Recently, I've found that I have been really in the mood for Jack/Daniel fic set either during or immediately after the episode Fire and Water. It's an early favourite episode of mine, and one that always hits me like a suckerpunch. That 'Daniel's dead, sir' gets me every time, and I don't even want to think about how many times I've seen that episode over the last 25ish years. Even though I know Daniel's not dead, I still cry!

I've always found it to be such a great shippy episode - the way Jack sits on the ramp with his head in his hands, or how he smashed Hammond's car window.
It gives me a lot of 'I think he cares about that archaeologist of his' feels.

I love fic where Jack is reassuring himself that Daniel is ok - a bit of angst devolving into some damn hot sex. Or fic where Jack is unwilling to let Daniel out of his sight. Or maybe it's the first time Jack admits his feelings - not just to Daniel but also to himself.
There's just so many possibilities!

I also have a vague want to write fic of my own. I haven't written fanfic in I dread to think how many years. Probably not since I was a teen. But I have this image in my head: there's been a small get-together, a home-coming for Daniel. Jack's been... on edge, I guess, all night and as everyone leaves, he slams the door shut behind them and just crowds Daniel up against the closed door. And you know how his voice goes all low and rough as he tells Daniel not to damn well die again, that's the second time he's done it and don't you dare do it again. That kind of thing.

Also, if you have any recs for fic based on/around the episode, please feel free to share them

I mentioned in my Introductory Post that I would make another post about my fannish interests - and this is that post.

I'm only really in one fandom - Stargate. The original movie, SG-1 and Atlantis. I didn't really gel with Universe, I haven't seen (or am at all inclined to do so) Infinity or Origins. My heart definitely belongs to SG-1 though which I have loved since I was a pre-teen

Pairing wise, It's Jack/Daniel. I have been shipping them before I knew what shipping was, before I knew what sex was - and even more so after!
I'm not an OTP person though and will ship pretty much anyone/everyone. Especially anyone/Daniel, with Daniel on bottom. I enjoy most combinations of Jack/Sam/Daniel, Cam/Sam/Daniel/Vala.
But my heart will always belong to Jack/Daniel

I don't watch a huge amount of TV/movies, and when I do, I tend to stick to the ones I know and love.
Indiana Jones, The Librarian, The Mummy, National Treasure, Tomb Raider,
Charmed, Farscape, The Librarians, Relic Hunter, The Sentinel
I have recently enjoyed The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, A Discovery Of Witches, and Blood and Treasure. As well as that random interest in Ancient Aliens. There's a National Treasure show on Disney+ that I want to see, and I do want to try the Charmed remake.
Essentially, I love cheesy, fun, treasure-hunting - but also witches!

I can't pick a favourite book, I never have been able to. I'm usually reading 2 books at a time, one non-fiction and one fiction
My current non-fiction read is The Human Past: World Prehistory and the Development of Human Societies by Christopher Scarre
My current fiction read is A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

Music-wise I love heavy metal and my favourite band will always be Iron Maiden.
My journal name and title come from the lyrics of Maiden's Powerslave
Tell me why I had to be a Powerslave
I don't wanna die, I'm a god
Why can't I live on?
When the Life Giver dies
All around is laid waste
And in my last hour
I'm a slave to the Power of Death

I also really like Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, Korn, Rammstein, Slipknot, Disturbed, System Of A Down and Avenged Sevenfold.
