Further musings on fanfiction

I'm not entirely sure how this journal is turning into my random musings on fanfiction. It's not what I expected to be writing about, but I'm enjoying where it's going - especially the way posts are inspiring each other.

Today I'm wondering why it is that I'm only interested in reading fanfiction for Stargate (mostly SG-1, sometimes SG:A). I'm not a huge TV/movie watcher, but I do also enjoy Charmed, Farscape, The Librarians, Relic Hunter and The Sentinel.

I even know that The Sentinel has a pretty large fandom. A quick glance at AO3 shows over 14k fics, and I completely get the Ellison/Sandburg thing, and you could say I shipped them. But I have absolutely no inclination to dive into the AO3 tag for them and start reading.

So what is it that Stargate has that the other shows don't have that makes me read the fic. Mostly Jack/Daniel, but I'll read pretty much anyone/everyone if it's well written. And I do enjoy a good, gen, team, mission fic. I especially enjoy reading anyone/Daniel, with Daniel on bottom. Most combinations of Jack/Sam/Daniel or Cam/Sam/Daniel/Vala work really well for me. I've recently discovered Sheppard/Mitchell which I'm enjoying reading. But my heart will always belong to Jack/Daniel.

I don't search for Jim/Blair fic, or (especially considering I read Cam/Vala), I don't read John/Aeryn or have any interest in it. Why do I keep coming back to Stargate SG-1 and Jack/Daniel?

I like your random musings! :) Even if I don't know the show. I do know Sentinel 'verse and I've written a lot of it as an AU of another fandom. It's an interesting dynamic.

I've seen a lot of Stargate: Atlantis fic with the Sentinel & Guide traits and I'm not sure how I feel. I think I'd rather have Jim & Blair, and keep my other fandoms the way they are.

Often I've noticed that for some media, there's just SO much potential canon left unexplored either in the worldbuilding or characters that people are naturally drawn to continuing it through fanfic. But other media (to me) just doesn't...need anything else. Like one of my absolute favorite movies is Moulin Rouge but I would never bother looking for fic or anything because it is what it is, there's nothing about it that needs changed or continued or fixed imo.

And then of course on the other hand there's just THOSE ships where you'd read pretty much anything for a hundred times over just because you love the characters that much regardless haha

That makes a lot of sense - there's so many options in so many shows for missing scenes, or what happens after the cameras stop rolling, and characters interpersonal relationships are always fun to explore, especially the way so many people see them differently.

And Jack/Daniel is definitely the latter of those two for me. I'll read a million coffee shop AUs, so long as they end up together! I will always need more
